Agreement
These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your use of the Garage OBD iOS app (the “App”) and the garageobd.com website (the “Website”), provided by the developer of Garage OBD, , (“we”, “us”). By downloading or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
Read the safe-driving and automotive-risk sections carefully. Using diagnostic and datalogging tools with a vehicle carries real risks to you, your passengers, other road users and your vehicle.
The App
Garage OBD is a vehicle diagnostics and datalogging app. Through a compatible OBD-II adapter, it can display live telemetry, record datalogs, read transmission data, scan control modules for fault codes, clear fault memory after safety checks, create reports, export data and — as an experimental, opt-in feature — change coding settings of some control units. The App requires a Garage OBD account and syncs your data to it, as described in the Privacy Policy. Available features depend on your vehicle, adapter and App version.
Eligibility
You must be at least the age of majority where you live, or have the consent of a parent or guardian, to use the App. You must use the App only with a vehicle you own or are authorized to diagnose.
Safe driving
- Never interact with the App while driving. Set up gauges and logging before the vehicle moves.
- The driver’s full attention must remain on the road at all times. If you need to use the App while moving, a passenger must operate it.
- Mount your iPhone securely and lawfully so it does not obstruct your view, the airbags or the vehicle controls.
- Make sure the adapter and any cable do not interfere with the pedals, steering or your legs.
- Obey all traffic laws, including laws on mobile phone use while driving.
Automotive risk
Connecting third-party hardware to your vehicle and communicating with its control modules carries inherent risk. These risks include, but are not limited to, battery drain when the ignition is on with the engine off, warning lights, unexpected module behaviour, and conflicts with other connected devices.
You use the App with your vehicle at your own risk. Do not leave an adapter connected when you are not using it unless the adapter’s manufacturer states that this is safe for your vehicle.
Diagnostic limitations
Diagnostic information provided by the App may be incomplete, delayed or inaccurate. Fault descriptions may be generic and may not reflect the exact meaning used by the vehicle manufacturer. The absence of fault codes does not mean the vehicle is free of faults.
The App is not a substitute for inspection, diagnosis or repair by a qualified technician or for the manufacturer’s dealer-level tools. Do not rely on the App for decisions affecting safety-critical systems such as brakes, steering, airbags or restraint systems.
Datalogging and performance driving
Datalogging features are intended for vehicle analysis. Any performance driving used to record a datalog — such as full-throttle runs — must take place only where it is lawful and safe, such as a closed course or track, and in compliance with that venue’s rules.
Logged values depend on the vehicle, the adapter and the sampling rate, and may contain gaps or errors. Datalogs are provided for information only.
Vehicle modification
The App does not provide tunes or calibrations and does not flash or program control units. If you or a tuner use data from the App to make decisions about modifying your vehicle, you are solely responsible for those decisions and their consequences. Vehicle modifications can affect safety, reliability, emissions compliance, insurance coverage and manufacturer warranties, and may be illegal where you live.
Coding (experimental)
Coding is experimental and off by default. It has not been confirmed on a real vehicle and may not work on yours.
The coding feature lets you change settings stored in some control units (head unit, instrument cluster, climate and body control). It is available only after you turn it on in Settings › Advanced (developer mode). Coding data comes from public community sources and has not been verified by us on your car or software version.
- Changing coding can cause a control unit to stop working, show warnings, lose features or remain uncoded until a qualified coder recodes it. It can affect safety, warranty, insurance, emissions or legal compliance where you live.
- The App saves a backup of the module’s coding before a change and offers a restore, but a backup or restore can also fail. We do not guarantee that any change can be undone.
- Some functions are marked advanced and require you to confirm that you understand the risk. Odometer and immobilizer functions are blocked, and the App does not offer coding of the engine, transmission, brake, airbag, steering or gateway modules.
- Control units that require BMW’s signature (Secure Coding) are not written by the App. Obtaining or using such signatures is outside the App and your responsibility.
- Use coding only on a vehicle you own or are authorized to modify, with a stable battery (a charger is recommended), with the engine off and the vehicle stopped.
- Coding backups and a history of changes are stored on your device and synced to your account (see the Privacy Policy).
You use the coding feature at your own risk and are solely responsible for any change you make.
Legal text for the coding feature must be reviewed by a qualified lawyer (liability, warranty, safety, jurisdiction-specific rules) before the App Store launch.
Third-party hardware
OBD-II adapters are made and sold by third parties. We do not manufacture, sell, endorse or warrant any adapter. Adapter quality, firmware, speed and protocol support vary and directly affect what the App can do. Any issue caused by an adapter is the responsibility of its manufacturer or seller.
Compatibility
Feature availability varies by vehicle, engine, transmission, ECU software and diagnostic interface. We do not guarantee that the App, or any specific feature, will work with your vehicle or adapter. See the Compatibility page for current information.
Manufacturer independence
BMW and related marks are trademarks of BMW AG. Garage OBD is an independent product and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by BMW AG. All third-party trademarks belong to their respective owners. References to vehicle makes or models are for identification only.
License and acceptable use
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App on Apple devices you own or control, as permitted by the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions. You agree not to:
- copy, modify, reverse engineer or create derivative works of the App, except where the law allows it;
- use the App to access a vehicle without the owner’s permission;
- use the App to tamper with or defeat emissions controls, safety systems or odometer readings;
- use the App in any way that breaks the law.
Your data
Datalogs, scans, reports and coding backups you create belong to you. They are stored on your device and synced to your Garage OBD account; how the App handles them is described in the Privacy Policy.
Legal compliance
You are responsible for complying with every law that applies to your use of the App and your vehicle, including traffic laws, mobile-device laws, vehicle emissions and equipment regulations, and the rules of any track or venue.
Disclaimer of warranties
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the App and the Website are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free or compatible with your vehicle or adapter.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any damage to vehicles, loss of data, loss of use, personal injury or property damage arising from or related to your use of the App, the Website or any adapter, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim relating to the App will not exceed the amount you paid for the App in the twelve months before the claim.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from claims, losses and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your misuse of the App, your violation of these Terms or your violation of any law or third-party right.
Termination
You may stop using the App at any time by deleting it. We may suspend or end your license if you violate these Terms. Sections that by their nature should survive termination will survive.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Governing law not configured, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except where the law of your country of residence requires otherwise.
Apple App Store terms
These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the App or its content, has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the App, and is not responsible for any product claims, intellectual-property claims or claims that the App fails to conform to legal or regulatory requirements. If the App fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple for a refund of the purchase price, if any; to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. We will post the new version on this page with a new effective date. Continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
